About Us

Our History

In 1991, Karen Johnson knew that the Monument Mountain High School tennis team traveled to Camp Deerwood in Monterey for practice and matches. This was an expense for the district and the courts at the camp were not in good condition. Having children of her own who enjoyed playing tennis, and knowing other children would like to play an individual sport, she decided to look for a way to build courts for the high school. Ed Vorman and Trish Webber heard about Karen’s quest and the three Great Barrington residents formed the Berkshire Hills Tennis Assocation. The non-profit group met at John Watson’s offices in Great Barrington, and fundraising began. With help from over 200 organizations and private donations they raised approximately $135,000. Williams Construction Company built the seven courts in 1993. Berkshire Hills Tennis Programs offered adult and youth programs during the summer, school vacation times and for after school programs. They were recognized by the United States Tennis Association for their work in junior team tennis and adult team tennis events.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Berkshire Hills Tennis Association is to provide funding and oversee construction of seven tennis courts on property provided by the Monument Mountain Regional High School of the Berkshire Hills Regional School District. Once constructed, the seven courts will be given to and maintained by the Berkshire Hills Regional School District. The courts will be used primarily by the high school students, but will also be available to Great Barrington and Southern Berkshire residents during non-school hours, weekends, vacation periods and summers. The association will stay together until all funds are raised and continue with tennis programming thereafter. (Dated September 15, 1992)
